Things to Do

For sightseeing, Taobh-an-Allt's location could hardly be bettered. Loch Lomond itself, of course, is a short walk from the front door: and the cottage's situation at the heart of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park enriches your holiday with a wealth of breathtaking mountains, wild glens, and sparkling lochs to explore.

If you're in search of a little history, short drives to the north will take you to the heart of Rob Roy Country, from his house to his grave at Balquhidder, to the romantic ruin of Kilchurn Castle, or to the scene of the infamous Massacre of Glencoe. If art and architecture appeal, short drives south will take you to Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterpiece at Hill House, to the Burrell Collection, or to Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow. If you're interested in whisky, try a visit to Glengoyne Distillery, take your pick from the extensive range at Loch Fyne whisky shop in Inveraray, or sample the local Loch Lomond single malt.

Inveraray is only 25 miles away, with its famous castle, the fascinating Town Jail, the historic ship 'Arctic Penguin', and Auchindrain Open Air Museum, a superbly preserved 19th century Highland Township. And slightly longer journeys will take you to all the sights and experiences of Oban, Fort William and Stirling.

If you're looking for something more active, the loch itself provides plenty of opportunites from leisurely cruising to all varieties of water sports. Children will love the Sea Life Centre at Balloch and the swimming pool at Alexandria. And, of course, golf, pony trekking and fishing are all readily available in the local area.

Many people come to the Highlands to enjoy the beautiful walking; and if that's what you're hoping for, you could hardly find a better base than Taobh-an-Allt. There's everything nearby, from gentle lochside strolls through more strenuous hill walks to ascents of mighty Ben Lomond or the renowned peaks of the Arrochar Alps - including several Munros and the magnificent Ben Arthur, 'The Cobbler', the finest mountain in the Southern Highlands of Scotland.
